Uneven spatial sampling distorts reconstructions of Phanerozoic seawater temperature

چکیده
Abstract Paleotemperature proxy records are widely used to reconstruct the global climate throughout Phanerozoic and test macroevolutionary hypotheses. However, spatial distribution of these varies through time. This is problematic because heat unevenly distributed across Earth's surface. Consequently, heterogeneous sampling data has potential bias reconstructed temperature curves. We evaluated spatiotemporal evolution using a compilation δ18O data. tested influence variable coverage on estimates paleotemperature by steep “modern-type” latitudinal gradient flattened “Eocene-type” gradient, based samples. show that overestimated in ∼70% stages. Perceived climatic trends for some intervals might be artifactually induced shifts paleolatitudinal sampling, with equatorward concurring warming trends, poleward cooling trends. Yet, magnitude perturbations also underestimated. For example, observed Ordovician trend may underestimated due an shift sampling. Our findings suggest while vital reconstructing deep time, consideration nature crucial improving reconstructions.

متن کاملEffects of sampling standardization on estimates of Phanerozoic marine diversification.
Global diversity curves reflect more than just the number of taxa that have existed through time: they also mirror variation in the nature of the fossil record and the way the record is reported. These sampling effects are best quantified by assembling and analyzing large numbers of locality-specific biotic inventories. Here, we introduce a new database of this kind for the Phanerozoic fossil r...
متن کاملThe effects of spatial sampling choices on MR temperature measurements.
The purpose of this article is to quantify the effects that spatial sampling parameters have on the accuracy of magnetic resonance temperature measurements during high intensity focused ultrasound treatments. Spatial resolution and position of the sampling grid were considered using experimental and simulated data for two different types of high intensity focused ultrasound heating trajectories...
متن کاملUneven sampling and the analysis of vocal performance constraints.
Studies of trilled vocalizations provide a premiere illustration of how performance constraints shape the evolution of mating displays. In trill production, vocal tract mechanics impose a trade-off between syllable repetition rate and frequency bandwidth, with the trade-off most pronounced at higher values of both parameters. Available evidence suggests that trills that simultaneously maximize ...
